16 LinkedIn summary examples that get recruiter messages

LinkedIn renamed the summary section “About” years ago — but the rules for writing it haven’t changed. It’s still the largest searchable text block on your profile (2,600 characters), still fully indexed by LinkedIn search, and still the first thing recruiters read after your headline.

Only the first three lines show before “see more,” so the opening carries the keywords and the hook. Below: 16 before-and-after summary rewrites across five role types — steal the structure, then check what your own summary scores.

The 3-part formula behind every strong summary

Open with role + keywords

Line one names your target role and two or three core skills. Search indexes all 2,600 characters, but the first three lines are all anyone sees before “see more.”

Prove it with numbers

Two or three quantified wins in the middle paragraphs — quotas, uptime, sessions, dollars. Numbers survive a 6-second scan; “passionate team player” does not.

Close with a clear ask

Name the roles you want and how to reach you. Recruiters scan for intent — a summary that states its target role gets messaged for that role.

Software & engineering

Stack and scope are the filters — languages, cloud, team size, uptime. Both belong in the first two lines, not the last paragraph.

Built the infrastructure-as-code standards that took environment provisioning from 2 days to 20 minutes, cut on-call pages 55% by fixing our noisiest alerts, and led the multi-region failover runbook we now test quarterly.
